Can’t let my ego find out
I recently came across a beautifully skilled poet called Amir Sulaiman. His piece called ‘Divine Route’ touches on how he feels every time he releases a poem into the world. His words resonated with me this week.
“She asked, ‘what does it feel like when a poem comes out?’
I said it’s like I’m writing my insides out
and I gotta get it out before my pen dries out
before my ego finds out
can’t let my ego find out
because when I’m writing my insides out
my every fear, my every flaw, flies out
in my ego, where those fears and flaws hide out
so whatever, I do
can’t let my ego find out”
What do you return to?
I studied the play The History Boys for my English A-Levels.
I hated it when I first read it. I thought it was so incredibly trash.
Every now and then, I thumb through its pages.
In the Introduction, Alan Bennett has this one line that I feel captures an inner reality of some of my own little turning points in recent years.
“When the letter came saying I’d won a scholarship I thought life was never going to be the same again, though it quite soon was, of course.”
